The Salieri Syndrome

I don’t get it.

On-line social networks like MySpace, facebook, Twitter, Plurk, etc. What’s the point? I have accounts on these networks, but every time I get an update, read a post, get a “poke” I always face mediocrity.  Perhaps it’s the other members who’ve missed the point.  All they do is make shallow remarks, meaningless banter, false praises; all to be “popular”. I’m not saying that my friends who participate in these networks are shallow. Far from it. Rather, my friends oftentimes succumb to empty remarks or cute quotes just post something. I think it’s because those who ARE shallow are the majority on these networks. I guess our longing to be part of something drives us to behave this way. I, too, fall into this trap. But what about propagating knowledge, ideas, thoughts, pursuits of enlightenment, ANYTHING worth reading, grokking, embracing? I decided to find a network worth joining. Finding such a network, I thought, would be impossible. So, why not create my own network instead? Well, I have not fulfilled that request (at least, not entirely), therefore I continued searching for the illusive. Then a friend introduced me to TED which stands for “Technology, Entertainment, Design” and it promotes the notion of “Ideas worth spreading”. Cool! After registering and adding a profile with some substance, I decided to click on the TED Blog link. To my surprise, TED has a facebook and Twitter presence. Mediocrity rules.
